We not only know far more about other cultures, their customs, political and religious orientations , but with daily news and the entwined economic structures, we have become part of each other’s life.
This closeness of living together, requests even more understanding and respect for each other. Having been living in Hong Kong and multicultural cities as London, Melbourne and Den Haag, Jeanette Lotz enjoyed the experience to seeing people of different cultural backgrounds interact. In her opinion a successful integration is not reached by assimilation. This would mean annihilation of our own roots, with the danger that we would become a dull copy of each other. Instead, we should be aware and true to our own heritage and see the cultural influences from others as enrichment. If we observe, respect and try to understand them, the opportunity to encompass and integrate parts of these other cultures into our own, will present itself. The result can be an exciting and deepened fusion instead of absorption.
Being fascinated with Asia, Lotz adapts Asian artistic elements into her paintings, as for example Chinese love poetry. In combination with a very distinct European style, the paintings become a new fusion of those two cultures. Even her chosen protagonist to portrait the different facets of love, is a woman with an Asian/ European background herself.
